Dental Ozone Therapy

Activated Oxygen/Ozone is a naturally occurring gas that contains three atoms of oxygen versus two atoms in a normal oxygen molecule. The activated oxygen disrupts and kills pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, as well as removes their breakdown products and other necrotic debris. Healthy cells are protected by antioxidants that prevent penetration by ozone. Bacteria and viruses lack this protective coating and thus are vulnerable to oxidation.

The oral environment is host to many complex bacteria that develop into communities and form a biofilm on solid surfaces. The aim of periodontal therapy is to remove this biofilm and prevent the recolonization of pathogens in the treated areas. Studies have shown that subgingival (below the gum) irrigation with ozonated water reduced gingival inflammation, decreased pocket depth, and reduced bacterial count in periodontal pockets.

In our practice, Ozone gas is created from pure medical-grade oxygen.

The Ozone is then used in two forms:

  • Ozonated water – as a pretreatment rinse, and irrigation of periodontal pockets.
  • Pure Oxygen/Ozone gas – administered via a dental handpiece fitted with a cannula or small cup for procedures such as sealants, caries removal, fillings and crown preparations.
